Cry Engine - World Building

This is a hobby project of mine where I wanted to experiment with the Cry Engine, I had gotten some assets that I really wanted to see in the Cry Engine, I used that to get to know the engine and find out how it works. I decided I wanted to build a small swamp using some of the assets. Some of the pictures can be seen below.

My main focus was to have the water look very dark and unclear, to have trees in and around the water and have vegitation grow pretty much wherever it could. To get the right density I used a combination of a few big bushes, a few smaller bushes and a larger pool of smaller objects scattered around.

The order in which I build everything was from big to small, I started with the trees, then the rocks and big bushes, smaller bushes and finally the small twigs and grass.

Fun fact: There are only 2 different tree models used in the entire swamp which contains about 20 trees.

To create this area I did the following (in order):

  • Adjusted Landscape
  • Adjusted Water (height, color, reflection)
  • Adjust Lighting
  • Placed Big Assets (Trees, Big Bushes, Rocks, Bridges)
  • Placed Small Assets (Small Bushes, Tree Trunks, Small Rocks, Water Decorations, Grass/Twigs/Mud)

In the future I want to continue experimenting with the Cry Engine and start adding gameplay functionality to this area.
